My diesel SUV ended up having a bad cylinder because the injectors were leaking fuel causing carbon build up. There wasn’t any warning or check engine light but after researching it I now know that to look for, there’s a black substance that builds up around the injectors.
The dealer quoted me $20K for a new engine, which is crazy, I could have put a used engine in the car by a non dealer mechanic for around 5-6K, but the engine would still have about 100K-150K miles on it.
I think I found the next best thing, selling the car to an auction for parts or rebuilds. I found 2, copart.com who offered me $1750 and CarBrain.com who offered $2850. With those numbers in mind I found a local guy online that was selling diesels cars on facebook. I checked his listings and it appeared that he was selling a few at a time, some had R or salvage titles, so I figured he fixed them up. I asked him if he was interested in my car and he offered me $3500. I ended up buying a car off him minus the $3500 trade for my car.
So don’t junk your old or non working car before getting a quote from one of these places. They come pick the vehicle up and give you a check, you don’t have to do anything else.
