Have you received an invoice from iDNS encouraging you to pay them $45 per year to renew your domain name? I keep getting these letters (Domain Name Expiration Notice) in the mail – and I wanted to let you know $45 is way too expensive for a domain name.
iDNS makes it appear that you are a current customer (although they do state that you’ll be transferring your domain to them if you read all the text.) But enough people must see this as an invoice and pay it – otherwise they wouldn’t be sending these out.
I don’t know if there’s any harm in transferring your domain to iDNS, but it is about 4-5 times more expensive than most other registrars.
So if you need to renew your domain, you are probably best off renewing with your current registrar or transferring your domain to someone like http://godaddy.com or http://bluehost.com.
If you can’t remember who your domain registrar is, visit http://www.whois.net to find out.
Their letter starts out “as a courtesy to domain name holders…” but tricking people into overpaying for a service is anything but courteous.
